Kim .... I am willing to cover fuel related questions ... but noting that I am not the expert that some claim !! I do run Petrochem labs etc. and deeply involved in the supply / inspection of fuels for quality and quantity.

Now I am offering to condense / write general notes for fuel specs etc. and also for some of the unusual side matters related. But I am unsure of where / how I can pass this on via the firum ... as text / messages should be short enough not to fill the servers etc. and also be easy to read.

Your advice would be appreciated ----- you have my e-mail / PM on file and I know we have direct e-mailed before on various matters ..... its an offer - ?????

Nigel,

Thanks...we've been talking about an FAQ style section of the websites for some time now and in fact have been playing with some code. Initially this was to provide new FAQs and Help sections for the websites themselves but it looks like they might work equally well in a different setting for popular QandAs.

Out of office at present but I'll mail you later in the week.

Thanks
Kim

FAQs

FAQ's would be a good idea, especially if they could be linked to previous threads.

There are a few ?s which are asked regularly, which have been very fully answered in the past. A FAQ which pointed people at those accumulated outpourings would both answer the question, and let people sample the 'tone' of the forum.

E.G
How do I start sailing?
What should I buy as a starter boat?
Where to find cheap moorings?
What does the RYA do?

etc

Re: FAQs

I can think of another frequent posting ......

Osmosis !!

Careful .... I have friends with them !!

I love classics ..... Folkboats, SCODS, Rustlers, .... Hilyards ..... twisters even !

But I have the age old problem ..... I have an old boat, does me fine .... but the next one has to have shower, etc. etc. to keep the young lady happy. I'm getting older and having a young lady on arm is important to me !!! So I can a suffer a boat thats built for comfort instead of beating around the cans etc.

OK then,,,,, a multi-part fuel question.

When an oil company cracks off as much petrol and diesel from the crude as they can some of the left overs is paraffin... as it's a by product why is it so expensive?

If I find that I have five gallons of diesel in the tank but need six to get home, would it hurt to dump a gallon of paraffin in the tank to make up the difference?

If paraffin is £2:50 a gallon why do Nauticalia get away with selling 'lamp oil' (paraffin with added colour) at £5:00 a lt ?

I have more,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Re: FAQs

Easy the answers are:-

1 Pull on that bit of string to pull that raggie bit skyward

2 A boat with a big starting gun on the foredeck

3 The cheap moorings are found by the Dodo nesting sites

4 Not a lot!!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Re: OK then,,,,, a multi-part fuel question.

I suspect a trick question here - as most people don't appreciate Cracked and Straight Run ..... so .....

Generally Gasoil was straight run not Cracked .... until recent blends and specs allowed for greater range on quality and use. Straight run gasoil usually has less residuum and less likely to block fuel filters / lines etc.

Cracked products are further 'into' the refining process and lighter / heavier products 'split' off. But can result in a different quality.

OK onto the Parafin ...... simple name - but not so simple product. It can be Parafinnic residuum from refining or parafin clean product. The two are not same. As to price ... ask the Oil Co's !!! Price is market / Co. related - not necessarily to production.

Of course you could add anything you like to any fuel ..... and I would expect the mix you ask to work, but I for one would never recc'd it and would make sure that a) all lines and filters are flushed after, b) any left over mix is diluted as quickly and as much as possible by adding copious amounts of good diesel.

Lamp oil true - is actually high quality Kerosine - not straight parafin..... so it needs to be ascertained which we are talking about ....... as to Nauticalia .... I have always found their prices to be high for most things anyway, which is a shame as it means the RNLI misses out on a lot of 'dosh' .... But it still does not justify per litre as you quote.

So anyway you have jumped the gun with these Q's .... as the topic was actually a discussion as to whether to HAVE a FAQ / Fuel debate / info site ..... No problem but could be better in the normal forum until decision on style made ....

Re: OK then,,,,, a multi-part fuel question.

Nowadays there's no such thing as a by-product in the refining process. Every fraction can be treated to produce almost whatever is needed. All the heavy stuff that used to go for marine fuels now goes to the hydrocracker and largely comes out as gasoline. The balance between, say, diesel fuel, gasoline, paraffin and chemicals stock is largely dictated by market forces, not technical issues. Even bitumen and waxes can be broken down into lighter products.

Re: OK then,,,,, a multi-part fuel question.

No trick questions, was just letting a few of my hobby horses out for a gallop. :)
The paraffin in the diesel question was because it happened to me after a fuel line leak on a day of flat calm. I ran out 200 yards short of the fuel dock at Bradwell. Though I had two gallons of paraffin on board. A 80% diesel/20% paraffin mix might have avoided the embarrassment, but what harm would it do?
Sorry to jump the gun,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Re: OK then,,,,, a multi-part fuel question.

If you could start the engine on good diesel and then add the parafin ..... I don't see what could be wrong .... as long as you didn't leave residue / parafin remaining undiluted in the tank.

Fair question and I'm sure many apreciate the possible use of it ....
