Thinking of buying one

Lots of searching later I cannot find out what the AIS/GPS output looks like. Is it just a bunch of wires or is there a socket of some sort?

Thanks in anticipation :)

A bunch of wires! don't be put off its really good set, Ais is best viewed on a plotter/laptop (small screen)

Hi, no not put off but just need to think through the wiring plan and diagram. All the diagrams show for a female RS232 into the computer but I have a male form a USB converter so I need to get my pin numbers correct! And I want to make sure the connection is in a safe place

This help? https://www.manualslib.com/manual/793479/Standard-Horizon-Gx2200.html

I've a Gx2100. The NMEA cables were just a bunch of wires. The manual had the details of the colours and the NMEA baud rates and supported sentences.

It's not dissimilar to the Gx2200. Certainly the 2100 AIS display is not unusable but you'd want to feed the data into something better (I use OpenCPN and a Raymarine i70 - the former is the best) and I'd expect the 2200 to be the same.

You may wish to search for some more specific installation instructions (they are around so do a Google) as the manual is not particularly clear as far as wires for which baud rate and function etc. (or was it just me ;-) ). Once sorted though they are a fab piece of kit.

I bought one of these last year and was also concerned about installation as I wanted the AIS data to go into my Raymarine E7d.

To add to my concern, I needed to extend the NMEA wires too but did a bit of research and in the end just extended the two wires using Cat5 cable and chock blocks.

It's literally two wires from the radio to the plotter, check both are on 3800 and off you go. I couldn't believe it when it all worked straight away for me :-)

While everybody has jumped to the conclusion you want to integrate the VHF with a plotter. You might not want to do that straight away.

I occasionally sail with a chap who has the set. All you do is set up the MMSI number and then plug in the antenna coaxial wire and off you go. The internal GPS is brilliant and will get you a fix from cold in about 5 mins. The AIS screen is small, but does everything, including doing a direct call to a target.

Bit of a strange comment. I think people just thought he wanted to do something with the AIS output. Not sure where they got that idea.
