Had a wonder down here today. Overheard a conversation about some kids who had been playing with a guys tender on the ATL. Not good, they had lost an oar and tried to start his engine. thankfully it didnt start I guess or I suspect they would have nicked it. Is the gate going to be in operation again, or was it open for a reason?
Also had a quick look at the new decking towards the end of the ATL. If I'm honest I was surprised to see that for its width 2m? There was only a centre span supporting the boards. My OH commented on them feeling unstable which is when I noticed, several had no screws in them as well. The rest of the ATL had two spaced supports and I saw the top end had 3... Just curious as the decking boards look fairly typical home stuff, and flexed a lot even with only my 13.6 stone weight...
I'm surprised you didn't already know how but it wasn't foolproof, perhaps it needed practice....FWIW, when I used the ATL around 2008 I met a group of juvenile males & a young girl upon my return from the pub exiting the turnstile gate on their way back to shore and when the girl saw that I was hunting for my token she offered to show me how the group and their mates gained access whenever they wanted without any need for a token. The problem of youngsters accessing the ATL at that time was well known and leaving a tender was a risky business- perhaps the security is different now?
Although it's true some kids got on the ATL and boarded someones dinghy, this was quickly rectified.
The gate has no power at the moment so we allowed it to be left open so folk could get ashore. This was a very rare occurence and we are shortly employing more staff to provide even better security. The gate should be fixed this week.
The decking boards are of the same,if not better quality as the originals which have lasted 20 years, there were a few loose ones as they are having tamper proof bolts fitted, which will be done this week.
Did you notice the high quality galvanised steel frame on the end pontoon under the boards? This will give the walkway alot more stability, and with funding we hope to eventually have this all the way up including the better handrails which are fitted to the new pontoon making it alot safer.
I carried approx 70 passengers ashore on Saturday, all seemed impressed with the new part of the walkway, and appreciated the many hours of hard work and effort people have put in to get it back up and running, and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors this season.Hope to see you soon.
Cheers Phil.
Hi Chris,
I am still running the trot boat,we have now employed another harbour operator so we have 7 days a week cover 12 hours a day.
Free mooring up to 4 hours,if not staying over 4 hours there is a small charge of £1 return per person to use the trot boat, the mooring fee is £10 overnight for boats up to 27ft,£12 28ft to 36ft.
Was a pleasure to help on your last visit.
Pontoons coming end of July .
Regards Phil.
Sorry forgot to add 37ft to 42ft £14......over 42ft £14 plus £1 per ftInteresting to read that as I was charged more than £12 for a mooring tonight.
