Hi,

At some point this winter I intend to do up Sunrunners' quarter berths which are currently in a not very nice state :

One idea I've seen for quarter berths is just to use wooden slats (iiuc called "ceilings") up the side of the hull. However, as you can see from the picture the hull has a stringer running the length of the berth which would mean the frames supporting the ceilings would need to be notched or laminated with different thicknesses to account for that. There's no problem doing that of course, but I did wonder about putting some stowage space instead.

It's not very clear from the picture but the hull slopes outboard away from the berth for quite a distance so a fair amount of space is wasted as there's nothing to hold stuff off the berth. Locker frontage springs to mind but would have the effect of making the berth seem/be very cramped.

I just wondered if anyone here has any ideas (preferably some pix too) for any alternative solutions for stowage in this area which work well ?

Many thanks,

On a colleagues UFO he has a longitudinal panel rising straight up and divided into two halves: a top and bottom separated by the stringer. The bottom half is simple cave lockers with a cutaway to access, the top half (shelf runs along stringer) has net fastened access to prevent stuff falling off. The net has elastic along the top. There is a partition that runs up the middle separating the arrangement into fore and aft lockers. The partition will be needed to stiffen the panels. I think the net was just fastened to the shelf and a baton on the underside of the deck.

Yup.
Perhaps start the vertical face of any cupboards or shelving 'above' the stringer. And maybe don't take it all the way to the deck, leave a long shallow shelf to stow oars, boathook etc.
Cover the stringer and lower bit in offwhite vinyl. Don't make it all too fussy, you might not need the slats at all.

Also worth considering making a canvas liner with pockets. Will cover the GRP and provide useful stowage.
