Shipmates, cabin crew, captains, skippers, bosuns, sailors or whatever else you may be or do, this question is for you. Your opinion is valuable, so please let me hear it.

Picture the scene. You and your crew are in a 'safe' UK marina berth. Most of the crew have retired for the evening and have taken themselves off to noddy land. You and the first mate have decide to watch a favourite video and relax for the rest of the evening. It's a stinker of a night, sleeting and very cold outside.

Suddenly there is an almighty roar within your ship. Everything around you shudders violently, loose materials are thrown sideways. lots of banging and clumping eminates from beneath your vessel and KABOOM, one last deafening bang! At least one crew member is thrown from their bunk. You realize when you try to stand up that the doorways are well leaning over! Further investigations amid your very frightened crew reveal the sickening truth. YOUR pride and joy has stopped 'floatiing' AND fallen over very hard to one side.

Now, what would YOU do?

neatly sidestepping the flying tv set, yet of course still holding on to the beer, i would um get everyone up esp from fwd cabins up, turn off mains lecky and gas, and go and give the lockkeeper a good kicking.

After changing trousers to remove evidence of unashamed wimpishness... i would evacuate all and sundry.. in the process making sure that water, batteries etc were all off... together with fuel taps.

As teh weather is not at its best (after all it is the UK) - i woudl recommend the aforementioned crew grab some warm clothes prior to exit!

All depends i guess on how much time you have!

Curious though.... why do you ask... or are you a serious paranoid pessamist?

Cheers,

Craig.

check all ok and noone injured
check bilges
Switch off eveything
Switch power back on
Hunt for torches and flares harness and lifejackets
Curse wife for moving moving torches
Switch power off again
Switch power on again and look for torch batteries that have been taken out and put in GPS
Switch power off again
Get kitted up
Get on deck and have a look

I would do the above Hopefully without the delays and cursing , well delays
then assess situation

...It was like that when i found it!

Summat funny \'ere.....

One minute relaxing watching video etc etc , next minute all bloody hell lets loose.....surely got to be an earthquake(unlikely in ukmarina!) or summat if not noticed anything unusual happening in between? Safe marina, tied up to pontoon 'spose so why boat fall over anyway? Normal rate of drop in water level gives plenty of warning summink up....banging on bottom, gradual tilt WHY......naah....summink strange 'ere.......

Re:No No No!

Firstly, find camera, video even better. Nominate youngest crew member to take charge of filming horrific scene of bodies laying about groaning with bad backs, necks and falling appliance injuries. Then...
CALL CLAIMS DIRECT!!

Re: I know - do nothing!

Agreed b1 - The suddenness of this means outside forces are at work.

The answer is that the international transport company has grabbed hold of the wrong boat. We could make a song and dance about it ....

....or shut up quietly and get a free trip at least across the channel and possibly all the way to the med! Then make a song and dance about it, and they'll have to take us back a week later.

Get everybody out very quickly! Forget switching things off you could cause more danger to yourself, with sparks from swtich gear, just get out and find out whats going on, then you can decide whether it´s safe to go back on and switch everything off! but first priority get everyone off the effing thing!!

Be very carefull about what video I watch, rythmic vibrations conflicting with the natural ups and downs of the swell can cause all sorts of problems!

I was on that boat! Colvic 42, Peel Island June 2000. Skipper swore there was enough water beneath us. We fell over at 04.00 hours.

What did we do? Settled into lee berths and waited for the tide. NOBODY would have been seen DEAD on deck!

Thank you tcm,

Obviously a good sense of humour which is very useful in certain situations.

However, please give this matter some serious thought, ask questions, give me your opinion, really what would you do?

Oh by the way, the lock keeper was only following orders from his superiors, the marina manager/company.

Hope to hear from you again.

Regards,

Firstspirit.

Dear Toad,

Thank you for your reply.

The skipper in this situation did exactly as you suggested but with one slight variation. It is the first claim ever this skipper has ever made, so in turn, contacted the insurance consultant for advice.

Subsequently the skipper was assured to 'be assisted' by the consultant (as he for many years had dealings with the operations director of the marina company concerned!!!) and the whole matter would sort itself out in due course through the consultant............but it has not yet!

Keep thinking about it please, what else would you do.

Regards,

Firstspirit

Tripleace,

You can not blame 'the wife' as you put it, if she has not done anything wrong!

I would like some just advice or opinion from you please, for instance who do think is responsible for this incident, who should be notified, what should the marina company have done imediately after this incident, have any regulations been broken, what about health and safetey regs...lots and lots more to come..

FEED ME!

Regards,

Firstspirit.
