This is pretty game changing?

Uses the Iridium constellation. Presumably the widespread availability will reduce the pricing? Very useful if messaging extends to weather files etc.

Apparently there's already a similar system for new premium apple phones, anyone have experience of that yet?

Apparently the apple service is free for a two year pilot at the moment. Long term pricing not announced. I think they limit it to emergencies through a pre defined contacts list, can include family though I think.
