Oil is leaking from prop unit into tunnel. Has anybody any experience of replacing the prop shaft seal on this unit? The leak was spotted after the very cold weather a few weeks ago.

Does anyone change the oil routinely, or are they supposed to be maintenance free?

The unit is 1994 vintage, mainly fresh water use.

This is all from memory and yours maybe slightly different but principle is the same. Remove the prop and you will see some retaining screws around the bearing housing, remove these and pull out prop shaft, check that that upper gear doesn't fall out, stuff a rag in to hold it up, if it does check if there were any shims behind refit them first. You can remove the shaft and bearing (maybe a circlip holding it in housing) and then you should be able to see the seal, hook it out and replace remembering to grease the lip, assemble and fill with oil. It can be done in situ but if the tunnel is deep its easier to remove the motor and drop out the outer section and work on it on the bench. Remember to drain the oil first or it will leak everywhere when you split it.
Generally maintainence free, if the oil is stabil or if it creeps down thats OK. Yours obviously goes down faster.
