apologies as I realize that my questions become more detailed/focused and definitely boring...

Planning to get someone built a f/b dash cover that goes all along the width of the f/b covers instruments, morse controls and the steering wheel.

I'll get a decent thick canvas hopefully with some lining inside to avoid damaging the paintjob underneath, BUT I'm stuck on the fixings!

MiToS had these oblong I'd call them butterfly things secured with two screws on the bodywork and the canvas had an oval hole, push in and twist the fixed bit's butterfly.

Not bad, but look fugly when the canvas is off (which is going to be the case when you're onboard using the boat...)
Much prefer the simple cloth type halfinch buttons that clip but I'm worried they wont be strong enough and I may loose the whole canvas (especially with the winds blowing yesterday down here!)
Saw some other type (a cross between the two mentioned above) where a thin slightly ribbed pin protrudes from the fixed bodywork part and the canvas bit has a small hole with a spring bit sort of half blocking the hole. Once pushed in the spring force keeps it in place. Problem with them is that salt springs et al only work for a few years and eventually either lock or break.

Sorry don't have time atm to search and add pics for all these, I'll try and do in the evening unless someone suggests the ultimate securing method earlier ;)

cheers

We use a combination of "ribbed pins", which seem to be extremely secure, and stainless press studs. The pins are on / near corners, for extra strength and out of the way, with the studs inbetween. In the worst winds, one or two press studs - usually the well used ones - might come loose but never had a pin let go.

well impressed!
thanks all for helping me sort my terminology and introducing another type I didn't know of.

So, the butterfly I mentioned is actually Common Sense Fasteners [ http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor-canvas/canvas-21.html ]

The ribbed pin I had in mind and widely available around here are the Lift the Dot [ http://www.softbitsshop.co.uk/lift-the-dot-range-24-c.asp ]

Press studs is the halfinch cloth ones I mention, and it's good to know that some are stronger than others ;)

Wasn't aware of the Tenax Fasteners (actually was confusing them to the lift the dot)

Looks like that Press Studs in the flatter more accessible areas, with the more robust Tenax Fasteners hidden in the corners is what I'll probably do. The fixed part of Lift dot and tenax are not so pleasing to the eye (and under certain circumstances could be a hazard for kids playing and bumping around)

cheers

thats what we have on alle covers on BA Vas,
some covers on FB furniture have only press studs,
canopy's, wind screens, etc, have only Tenax
the quality and reliability of the Tenax fasteners is quite ok, even with salt spray on them,
we grease them, aswell as the press studs,
the Tenax are easy DIY replace-able,

I have various blogs on all types of fasteners including Tenax, Turnbuttons, Snap fasteners and lift the dot.

Top left - Lift the dot
Top right - Snaps
Bottom left - Turnbuttons
Bottom right - Tenax

They all have pros and cons, none are made from 316 A4 stainless, most from brass nickel plated.
