Spending a few weeks down West from I.O.W. end May/June in 39' mobo.
Thinking of staying at either Mayflower Marina or Queen Anne's Battery in Plymouth. Any comments, good, bad or indifferent on these marinas?
Will ultimately make Falmouth. Port Pendennis Inner Marina looks good but is it too noisey with the Locals so close at hand?
I have heard rumours that Torquay no longer welcomes visitors. True or false?

Mayflower is a bit remote. Sutton is good for the Barbican. QAB a bit more difficult as the bridge shuts at nine pm.

Never found any noise problems anywhere in Falmouth.

Not heard of Torquay not taking visitors. But theres always Brixham.

My way would be. Torquay HM pontoon, but better still Brixham HM pontoon. Bit of a squeeze But closer to town and much more fun. Forget Plymouth and go up the Yelm. Having spent a night in Salcolmbe the night before. Then down to Fowey, then take a trip round Charlestown and megavisy ending up either in the visitors marina in Falmouth (close to the pubs) or up the river, tranquilly on one of the many pontoons.

You'll gather. We dont do marinas, less forced. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

up river pontoon on the Yealm is quiter as most people don't get past the pool!!!
If you really want Plymouth, I agree with HLB that Sutton is best, through the lock and in the centre of the Barbican. Outer marina at Pendennis is OK for a night. Go fractionally further west to the Helford - a truly magical place.

Think the rumours re Torquay due to the original visitors berths being rented out to annual berthholders a year or so ago. However I am sure there are usually berths available nonetheless apart from peak times of course.

Agree re. Plymouth - it has to be Sutton Harbour or QAB. The former may be a bit noisy as it's right in the "lively" area of the city. From QAB there is a shortcut to the "action" via the bridge hlb mentions. Whilst it does close relatively early you can still make it back via a detour that's not too long, especially after a couple of drinks.
You don't mention Dartmouth in your itinery - IMHO it's the best of all the S.Devon Harbours. There are 3 marinas but Noss on Dart is a long way out of town.
Salcombe is very pretty and pretty expensive. However, this year the HM is making an effort to provide a better experience and services will allegedly have improved over the recent past. No marina though.
Yealm is lovely as is Fowey - again no marinas.
Not sure about Falmouth - I've used the very convenient Visitors Marina in the past. The town just feels a bit odd and seems to be populated by a lot of folk who would have been at home in the film Deliverance. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Upriver is lovely as is the forementioned Helford River.
Hope you have a super time.

PS I'd advise you not to refuel at either Dartmouth or Salcombe as the fuel barges there are notoriously costly.

I agree with all that has been said... preferred options in Plymouth are Sutton Harbour if you don't mind being in the action, QAB if you you don't mind a short walk from town.

Personally I would avoid Mayflower... it is a taxi ride to town and it is in the River Tamar and so can be subject to very fast tides that depending on your berth, make getting into and out of the berth a bit hairy at springs.

Thars nowt rong with Falmouth, get thi sen parked up and intut Chain locker, whilst floosies bog off to Tesco, it's a bit of a hike, so get more beer in while ther away. If yer unfortunately roped in. Take the dinghy, to a very convenient little harbour just by Tesco's and a little pub for you across the road.

We have a new Tesco in the Events Square next to the museum, 2 minute walk.

Then up to Mr Newmans place, just hook up to one of his "Project" boats and have a pastie and beer or a cream tea. Carry on to Truro if there a tide. Better still, sneak up to the Pandora abit early, just about half tide. Tie up in Charlestown if the tides right, else anchor outside. Go visit the tall ship and feed at the pub. Yep, go to Helford as well. Pint of prawns in the Ship is good. Missed out Looe and Polpero. Both worth a visit.

I guess it is horses for courses

The best part of our year at Mayflower was the stride over the Hoe into the Barbican for dinner each evening and then the stagger back.

Some evenings were absolutely great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif - others less so - depending on the weather /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
