PY numbers

I've had the results of my weekend race and the times are corrected by a factor called a PY number. For the life of me I can't see how the corrected time is related to my time and the PY number in any way. I have tried dividing the time by it multiplying the time by it etc.

Help!!

It is a bit complicated though as a handicapping system it has a lot of advantages - not the least of which is that it evolves as information about a class or individual boat emerges - it can even rate the performance of a boat/helm combination.
