I've finally persuaded my wife to let me wash my sheets and halyards in the washing machine. Is there any reason why I should not also dry them in the tumble dryer?
I always let them 'air dry'. Tumble drying would not be very efficient (would dry the surface while leaving the core still damp), and would have to be done a cool setting or else there would be a fair chance of damaging the rope.
I wash all our ropes in the washing machine, often along with other items such as hatch covers, winch covers, canvas deck shoes and so on. I use the non fast coloured setting and washing powder as normal. They come up lovely. However, I wouldn't put them in the tumble dryer, they are nearlydry just from the spin. Natural drying is much better, even for clothes. I think the heat of a tumble dryer hardens and is damaging to the fabric. Why else would they sell fabric conditioning tissues to put in your dryer.
Tell your wife, it won't harm her machine, it hasn't harmed mine and I have been doing it for years.
I will hang the ropes out to dry when I can get use of the washing machine. It's been a lovely day today for drying but it seems that underpants etc have priority over my stuff.
