We thought we'd read somewhere that there were some rules about size and position of name on boat ...
Maybe it was just for some special situation, like Windermere?
Anyway if there are any general rules, we'd be glad to know now as we're just looking at the vinyl lettering options.
Thanks.

Peel and stick!....Some navigation authorities have rules covering size and positioning of names.
Where abouts will you be using the boat?

Ah right - I think it was the Thames that we'd read about having rules.
Jessie is a trailer sailer and hopes to travel all over - even on the Thames but mostly coastal.

No actual rules I've heard of. If SSR registered there are rules for the SSR number. Maybe for Part 1 reg ?. Does a boat even have to have a name at all, I wonder?

Part 1 requires the name and port of registry to be clearly displayed. However, the port of registry may be omitted if the owner belongs to a sailing club which has a certificate and when the boat is marked with the club's initials.

Just to add that Windermere requires POWER DRIVEN vessels to display registration marks on both sides of the hull on the approved (and supplied) black panels. It makes jet skiers scratch their heads a bit as the panels are quite large and they cover up their lovely swoopy graphics.
March 29th sees the introduction of the 10mph speed limit so it won't be a problem for them soon.
It doesn't apply if you are motorless but does include yachts with engines and outboards. Many row boats and dinghies register anyway as the lake warden service then have a record of who and where you are and can contact you if your boat goes walkabout.
Names are up to you.

Certainly the official rules for the Thames mean (If I recall correctly) that you need the name on Bow and Stern but if you are just registering as a visiting craft then I have had no problems with Name on both sides of bow and SSR on stern. i.e. No name on Stern.

The are IMHO far more likely to worry about Boat Saftey Scheme stuff if you are unlucky enought to be inspected.

For permanently moored craft on the Thames it may be a different story - couldn't comment
