I am going to be glassing in some new ash deck supports but want to use polyester resin and 450g mat to glass them in . If i grind back to the old glass and lay a few bits of flat mat then glass round the support onto that overlapping it a bit will it give me4 a good enough bond or Must i use epoxy?
Thanks

I think it really depend s what you are actually trying to do.

Glassing wood supports to the underside of a deck head is a bit tricky to start with..
You need to radius the corners of the wood, and also the deckhead to wood join with bodyfiller, microballons or something so that when the matting is pushed against it the air can be expelled, or it will fall down,... Gravity..

You are right, providing a mechanical bond, grinding , is the first step to getting it all to hold together, plus a sealing coat over whatever you are glassing in to provide the chemical bond for it to continue...

As regards the weight of the lay up, it depends on many factors,
You can get away with using maybe 18 mm ply on edge, and glassing up on each side of it. The fiberglass angles that you create provide the strength, but you need to have room for that.
as it relies on the depth for its strength

Using a compatable polyester foam with a unilateral mat incorporated, and you can get away with little reinforcement, so its light..and can be shallow..

What ever you do I suggest that unless you have done it before, work in small amounts, prewet on a board, so it has resin in already, push up on a fluffy roller and work quickly to get out the air before the binder in the matt dissolves, or you will have more on you than the deckhead..

From a personal point of view introducing a wood like ash, or any wood for that matter into a fiberglass composite structure, can lead to all sorts of problems, moisture content, closed grain etc etc..Epoxy resins can solve this to a certain extent...But.
Plys, Properly prepared balsas, and foams, are in my opinion much more fit for this purpose....But I am sure that others will have opinions on that..

What ever you decide to do..Take precautions, wear gloves, goggles, and a mask if grinding, its messy stuff...

A paddle or metal washer roller is essential for rolling out air.. Good luck..
