Purging red diesel

Would it not just be easier to fly the French or Belgium tricolour and give the boat a temporary suitably French(or Belgium)name-then its highly unlikely that anyone will bother you?

No. There are two laws affecting this issue. First one says that fuel for leisure boating must be charged at the same rate of duty as fuel for cars and lorries etc. Second law says that duty free fuel for use where it is allowed ( tractors, fishing boats, heating etc) must be died a colour - almost everyone choses red but I believe the Micks chose green.

In any case our diesel isnt rebated. We pay the full duty on the but we use for propulsion. The other 40% is a standard allowance for heating. And thats why we are messing up the system, using diesel with dye in it but having paid full duty on it.

If you want a more detailed and accurate description , have a look at this
Thanks for that but we have moved on, we are discussing a post red diesel future. The law doesn't say propulsion fuel must be charged at same rate as road fuel, red fuel duty is anyway different, higher than road fuel, only that differing rate can't be applied to the same fuel. A FAME free "white" is not the same as road fuel, so could be differently rated.

The Belgian Customs are more vigilant against Belgian flagged boats than UK flagged boats, so that would not work.

Is it not possible to satisfy the EU and HMRC by adding a small second tank say 10L with a diverter valve. Use this when you see the customs boat heading for you, I am sure it may confuse them enough to give you the benefit of doubt. Return fuel could go into main tank?

Could be an added bonus if your main tank gets contaminated?

Can you be done if you are sailing and not using the fuel?

Yes just realised that you cant even carry it! doh..................

The diverter valve would be the problem. I think this ban on carrying red diesel is questionably - there is no problem having it in a fixed tank that is only routable to equipment like heating for which it is legal. I'm not convinced there is any enforceable rule against having a jerry can of it in the locker - its legality is totally dependent on what you do with it.

To reduce the staining caused by the red dye to the acceptable taint is it better to ......?

Seems like one problem is where to get unmarked fuel? Sure you can buy it at a garage but that is still a lot of lugging cans about..

Separately there is a consultation open now which ends on 11 march.. The main ybw page has links....
