Hi I have the opportunity to purchase a part finshed Reliant PW as designed by Glen-l Design. Big Boat, 49' on deck. I have questions that need answers before I puchase and if anyone can see other problems I may come across on the registration/ taking the boat out of the country please let me know.
Do you have to provide vat receipts for everything purchased in order to register the boat when complete ?
What if you aquire second hand equipment which you do not pay any vat on?
How is the boat affected by RCD.
What will insurance companies require when we finish the boat and want to insure it.?

You will find that you have opened a can of worms.
To escape building a boat to RCD specs, you call it a 'Home built boat' but having done that you cannot sell it within this country for five years after it is first launched.

On a home built boat you are required to keep on board VAT receipts (not copies) for all the major items of the boat.
As all the items on the yacht I am building are not new, I also intent to keep on board receipts for some second hand items.

This pack of data is generally only required when sailing in a foreign country (perhaps France?) and when returning from abroad.

There appears to be no problem when exporting a home made boat outside the EEC if that country has no objections.

You could of course build the boat to the EEC regulations and have it tested to the now or then current spec.

Just a brief summary hope this is of use to you.

You won't have any trouble registering the boat in the UK and sailng it away. Keep all your bills including mooring charges to claim vat exemption, but you are only likely to be asked for it when returning to the UK. I built a boat int the seventies and obtained vat exemption before going foreign by keeping every bill. I have never been asked for it abroad and you are most unlikely to be asked for an obviously home built boat. The authorities in Europe know what sort of boat has been purchased new and vat free for immediate export and you will not fall into this category.
Insurance can be difficult for a home built boat and many long distance cruisers like myself settle for third party only which is much easier to obtain.
