hi folks,im currently rigging up a pump for taking oil out of my sump and looking for some sort of tubing to go down the dipstick of no more than 6mm outside diameter, any ideas of what kind i should be getting and where from , many thanks.

You should be able to get hold of plastic pipe in B&Q or similar. It's worth mentioning that when the oil is hot the plastic tube softens and sometimes collapses with the pumps suction. Trial and error got me a suitable solution!

What ever you use make sure its secured to the pump. You dont want to lose it down the dipstick hole into the sump .... it has happened!

Another alternative is to fit a permanent oil drain kit.

Remove original sump drain plug, fit the hose fitting instead and route the hose end to a convenient place. Can even be pulled through transom drain plug.

Many marine engines have their dip stick tube designed ready for such use and all you need is a rubber fuel hose (motor bike shop) pushed over the top of your dipstick tube straight to your pump.
there shouldnt be any need to run a tube inside the dipstick tube on a well designed marine engine.

I'll be amazed if this is as effective as sticking a tube down into the sump. My Pela gets out all but a dribble. I have had to take off the sump plug a couple of times, and not much more than a teaspoon is left in the sump. If you are sucking from the top of the tube, you are relying on a fantastic vacuum. This must mean that the crank breather is not working. If this is the case, you are going to breath hot oil out of the tube when the engine is hot surely?

If so the metal tube that guides the stick down has to go completely to the bottom of the sump. Never seen that myself..

Unfortunately, on most engines, you'll have loads of oil left in the sump if you do this, as the tube won't run to the bottom of the sump :(

Ive got plastic hose from B and Q and fed that down the dipstick tube connected to a little pump that goes in the chuck on my battery drill and it sucks the oil right out with no issues from my old perkins engine, i run it for a bit to heat the oil up and keep trying it as the oil gets to room temp etc

costs not much from B&Q etc

I bought one of these 10-15 years ago.

It comes with a rubber hose that fitted over the top of my mercruiser V8 dipstick tube as per instructions.

The end of the dipstick tube is under oil, so there isnt an issue with suction although priming before you attach the tube shortens the process.

The first time I drained the oil from the dip stick I went to the trouble to remove the drain plug, what a waste of time, nothing came out.

My next engines were Volvo penta 41 which had a dedicated tube , the rubber hose fitted straight on top of the metal tube and again sucked perfectly.

BTW the above kit @ £25 comes with lots of thin tubes for feeding down the dipstick hole, its just that I didnt get on as well with the thin tubes as I do the rubber hose.

Current engines also have a dedicated suction tube.
