Pumping oil from your bilge?

Sounds ok, we use one of those mats that soak up oil etc under bothe engines.

I was hugly impressed by it recently, we have had an engine go pop a couple of weeks ago, when the engine was stripped for investigation diesel leaked into the port bilge, I was surprised next day when we went to the boat to find only clear water, no oil, no diesel.

So these mats do a fantastic job IMHO

I know a place where you can get a 32 pack of absorbant pads for £7.95....it is called Tesco and the pads are called Pampers!

That's nice but what if your a young lad like me, and the next time the GF comes aboard she see's a pack of nappies.... Think i'd be single pretty soon!

Fine if you have deep bilges and 1" of oil on the water. Might have a glitch if only a film of oil on the water.

It is possible to get bilge filters which are filled with peat moss which remove the oil from the bilge water. Oil soaked peat moss is not considered hazardous as it naturally biodegrades so no problem disposing. You can also get socks filled with peat moss or bugs to leave in your bilges and these also remove small quantities of oil.

If youve got loads of oil in your bilge you have a serious problem which needs fixing fast before you seize an engine.

I use the oil only absorbent socks/pads Volvo Penta supply to collect drips of oil or diesel and I have four lying in the bilge , when they are sodden with oil ( as they dont absorb water) I change them .

I can empty my bilge with a clear conscience.

I was thinking more of a worst case scenario, boat left alone, oil or fuel leaks out into bilge, automatic bilge pump kicks in and before you know it, a few gallons of crude over the side!
I also thought it may assist with the boat safety scheme who don't like auto bilge pumps for this very reason.
Wonder what their take on it would be?

As a boat is conventionally female, shouldn't you be using Tenalady? You know, the product that assumes that 95% of the UK female population is incontinent /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
