Pulsing Water Pump (when tap is open)

Our Jabsco fresh water pump pulses when running water (any tap is open fully)meaning the pressure goes high - low - high -low. I would expect the pump to run continuously until the tap is closed. Once the tap is closed the pump pressurises and holds pressure well.

Any thoughts on cause and fix?

Usually happens when the water in the tank is low as its trying to pump water that's not there, should stop after refilling.

Afraid not in this case, the vessel is new to us and the tanks have been filled to overflowing. However the system was drained down when we took ownership.

If it's always done that it sound as if there is no vessel to smooth the pressure fluctuation. If it's recent problem it sounds as if the smoothing tank or its valve is faulty.

You either don't have an accumulator tank ( what Richard is calling a "smoothing tank") or if you do its not set up ( pressurized) correctly.

In the absence of an accumulator a smaller capacity pump would solve the problem although it'll still pulse when the tap is only partly opened.

BUT

before you make any expensive alterations check that there is no restriction between pump and tap
