To get some clearance for a furling downwind sail, thinking of modifying the pulpit - that is removing the bar that runs across from one side to the other in front of the forestay, so it’s effectively split in half, like I’m seeing on some modern new boats.

Anyone done this – was it OK? Thinking things might get floppy, without the two sides bracing each other.

Got it done on Blush so the Manson anchor could be lifted inboard. The two forward uprights were connected by a curved plate which was bolted to the deck. Very strong. However if you have an anchor locker it may not be possible.

Sorry, can't include a picture, sadly we sold her at the end of last year.

Thanks for info Blush2. Bracing sounds good.

Was thinking I should have posted more questions - like best way to extend bow roller into a bowsprit substitute, taking into account extra leverage, but it's not looking like a popular thing.

We tried various ways of adding a short pole for an assymetric but none were very successful. Eventually we just used a removable block clipped onto an eye at the bottom of the forestay.

For things like that I would also check out the Offshore Special Regulations..

Even if you're never planning on racing, what they cover is all good stuff and is really all about safety and good practice.

What they say about an open pulpit is ..

I would assume that any larger gap and you'd have increasing risk of crew falling through it..

That's interesting thanks Martin_J. Pretty comprehensive document there!

Keeping within that gap width should be no problem.

Here was my modification to accommodate the headsail furler on my last boat:

And here’s the current boat:
