I,ve just spent another misarable Janary day (not fishing off Cromer Pier!!!),working on the Shetland at the bottom of the garden.Did the jobs i had lined up,re stud the canopy, fit helsman,s seat etc, when noticed drain plug leaking at stern!!!!.Ok i thought just tighten it up.......no it was actualy leaking around fitting to hull.to cut story i have found that bodgers and son have glued !!! fitting into hull instead off securing with locknut.Upshot is i,am left with a ragged 1 1/4 inch hole in back of boat.... any tried and tested method of bunging up hole!!! as standard fitttings willl now not work.... somone,s just reccomended launching boa t as is in 25 meters of water...errr gone for beer... or anything else handy!!!!

Re: PLUGS...............

How about expanding the hole so it is a regular e.g. 1 1/2 inch and fitting an oversized plug?

Find a skin fitting then fit a ball valve on it. On second thoughts I have an old but unused skin fitting, bolt through lever type with flange 1.5" I think, any use?. I am near Inverness send me a private message.

If it is a grp boat why not glass fibre the hole and then drill a hole to fit drain fitting and secure with lock nut? If wooden boat why not try glueing wooden plug in hole and then drilling to fit drain fitting etc?

If its above the water line you could try turning it into a cockpit draine with a flap valve?
