I have one of these USB modems unlocked from the original vodafone sim.

I have an expired wind SIM for which I have forgotten the pin code, so now it comes up as the PUK blocked.

I wil be getting a new (wind) SIM when I go back to Greece, so I presume it is the SIM card not the dongle that is now locked?

Or am I wrong and that it is the modem itself - bloody hope not as I have no idea where to get the PUK code from.

Hope someone can help!

I have one of these modems that also got a locked sim when a friend I lent it to put in the wrong access number for the modem 3 times. All you need to do is put any sim card into any mobile phone, put in the PUK number for that card, then the pin and the card will be activated . Then put that sim card into your modem and carry on as normal.

Sorry, I am being a bit dim, and don't follow.

Do I take the sim from the dongle and put it into a UK mobile phone. Where do I get the PUK number from for that sim - because I can enter it into the modem software if I had it. So don't really understand what steps to take here.

You are correct that PINs and PUKs apply to the SIM, not the modem. On my WIND SIMs they're printed on the credit card sized SIM carriers, as is usual.

The PUK code was designated by the service provider of the sim. Thier name will be on the sim IE O2.....Orange....Vodafone.

Go to google and input PUK code Orange etc and watch the Youtube vidio

All is clear now! So when I get a new Wind SIM I will get a new pin to go with it.

I take it that for Greece Wind is the best value for Data only? Cosmote seemed un diciferable, and I remember last time I tried - Vodafone never had any data sim cards available - "Avrio"

Wind seemed to be the only ones with their heads screwed on. I am hoping that now one can extend the Wind monthly 100MB by internet, where as before we had to find a Wind shop once a month which was a pain.

Role on summer

In my experience Wind was always easier to use than Cosmote, but the difference is much reduced - as I describe here.

What I will do is check their websites before going out to Greece and see what's on offer.

I have an E220 but I've never used it in Greece - so I can't comment on that aspect.

I have an encrypted file of usernames, passwords, that sort of thing, that I have on my tablet. I include PIN and PUK codes in that, in case I need them and don't have the SIM packaging with me. Cosmote cards have an additional code - αριθμός χρήστη - which their help desk asks you for, so note that too.

Thanks all - enough info now to be happy it will work on a new sim. The E220 set up on wind was so easy with the inbuilt Huawei software when we did it in 2011.

Dave - thanks - interesting voyage from last year - we are moving from the Ionian to Leros, but SWIMBO is concerned that the wind will be too strong!
