Pubs along the non-tidal Thames, can we list them in order?

Just for a bit of fun I thought I'd see if I could make a list of all the riverside pubs (or anywhere you can get a drink and a meal) from Teddington to Lechlade. When you talk to people who have never been on the river there seems to be a common belief that all you do is meander from pub to pub all day - whereas the reality (most of the time!) is quite different as sometime you can go for ages without seeing a pub!

So here's the rules - pubs to be listed in the order that you'll pass them going upstream from Teddington. They must be accessible from the river - so either have their own moorings (like The Red Lion, Shepperton) or at least sufficient public moorings (like the Bells of Ouzeley, Old Windsor), so if you can't see the pub from your boat it doesn't count! I'll apologise now to the Bull at Sonning, 3 Horseshoes Laleham and The Crown at Bray!

Not looking for recommendations or reviews, just a list, in sequence.

So where's the first stop on the Thames pub crawl heading upstream from Teddington?

I'd say it's the Anglers first and don't apologise to the Crown, Bray, firstly you can't moor anywhere in the village and secondly, it's very over rated with poor service and expensive everything. My local for over 20 years but no longer.

err ....for visitors like wot I am, the fact you cannot actually see your boat from the boozer does not matter one miserable jot and moorings merely nearbye are OK.
It just has to be a very shortish walk there and back.
So the two pubs just across the footbridge at Teddington would be the first on the list .
My priority , based on the fact that under no account must cooking, or heaven forbid, any washing up be involved. !
So max distance 20 mins going and something similar coming back preferable.

If we're talking pubs with no moorings and a 20 minute walk, there must be 15 watering holes in Kingston alone

From the beginning, pubs with moorings or less than 5 mins are..

The Anglers (Teddington)
Tide End Cottage (Teddington)
The Boaters Inn(Kingston)
The Gazebo(Kingston)
The Bishop(Kingston)
The Mill(Kingston)
The Olde Swan(Thames Ditton)
The Albany(Thames Ditton)
The Kings Arms(Hampton Court)
The Phoenix(Sunbury)
The Weir Hotel(Walton)

OK, sounds like we need a new thread for 'pubs somewhere near a river' then, not quite what I had in mind ;)

Recommendations for establishments that offer nosh ( not the Waterside Inn et al ) along with some alcohol within " say " a 15 min walk of any public/private mooring would be most useful for those of us from outside the area.
My favorite discovery was walking up a little alley at Runnymede and finding the Italian........
Although I personally thrill to beans on toast using paper plates during our annual week on Ye Thames, my significant other goes into serious non co-operation mode regards fenders and ropes if not fed frequently with military precision and considerable pre planning.

If this thread continues the way it seems to be going it will get nowhere.

Suggest start with a list of pubs with own moorings or within spitting distance of available moorings. Can expand with specific recommendations later.

What we really need is a list of moorings for starters to which can be added local info - oh, hang on, isn't that the River Thames Book? or the App?

Maybe I should just get me coat ........

Indeed, that was the idea!

Yup, why strain the brain cells, just google "Pubs by the river Thames" and a list pops up:

Yep, but thats out of date, doesn't answer the simple question 'pubs you can moor alongside' and takes the fun out of the thread - after all it was just supposed to be a bit of fun.

I can help out with some of the middle to upper reaches, all on the river with moorings...

  • The Ferry - Cookham
  • The Bounty - Cookham/Bourne End
  • The Dog & Badger, Medmenham (5 minute walk up Ferry Lane - pub has a sign at the moorings on the river)
  • Flowerpot Hotel - Remenham (2 minute walk from the pontoon mooring / slipway)
  • The Angel, Henley (immediately upstream of the bridge on the right)
  • The St George & Dragon - Wargrave
  • Coppa Club / The Great House - Sonning
  • The Swan, Pangbourne
  • The Swan at Streatley - Streatley (undergoing renovations but can still grab a beer at the moment I believe
  • The Beetle & Wedge Boathouse - Moulsford

Then my knowledge gets a bit hazy as the above are all day-trips from my marina (Thames & Kennet). But there is of course;
  • The Nags Head, Abingdon
  • The Head of the River, Oxford (not sure on mooring though)

Following upstream from here:

The Angelers (Walton on Thames)
The Swan (Walton on Thames)
The Red Lion (Shepperton)
Thames Court (Shepperton)

Then I don't know of any more till Staines, where there's three in quite a short space.

Here are some suggestions further up river.
The Boat House (Wallingford) Town moorings £7.00 overnight now
Waterfront (Benson)
Shillingford Bridge Hotel - never moored here, but believe mooring charges are high
Barley Mow (Clifton Hampden) I can just about make out the roof from the river so it counts, but short walk from bridge
The Pough Inn (Long WittenHam)
Nags Head (Abingdon) Town moorings opposite
King's Arms (Sandford Lock) moor outside or opposite
Isis Farmhouse (Iffley Lock) moor outside
The Head of the River (Oxford Folly Bridge) Could be a long walk from the nearest towpath moorings
The Punter (Oxford) Next to East Street moorings
Osney Bridge then comes into play

The free River Thames Guide app (for Apple, Android, Amazon) shows 47 riverside pubs on the interactive map of the Thames. Each can be tapped for more info and phone number.
Details of the app and download links at www.riverthamesguide.net
RTG is the official app of the British Marine Federation.

Yes indeed, I'm already a user of the app, very useful. But missing 3 pubs around Desborough Island and The Anglers ;)

if you can provide more info on the missing pubs I will add them to the next release (later this month) (name and post code or web address helps most...)
