I am going to have to do a few jobs myself and I have not got a clue to start. What I really need is to befriend an experienced boatyard sage (and to swap my YM subscription for one to PBO), but failing that, are there any good books I should stick on my Christmas list?

The latest PBO has a dvd on how to look after diesel engines

nigel calders book on boat electrics is very comprehensive

There are other books on grp

really depends on what you are looking to work on?

Nine times out of ten the easiest way is to do a Google for what you need to tackle. There are oodles of sites that have detailed, step-by-step descriptions of - probably - most jobs that need doing, many of them with photos.

It is then up to you to wade through what's available and decide which to heed and which to disregard.

Going directly for a book on someone else's recommendation runs the risk of being landed with one man's ideas, whose style you might not like! Another is getting lots of information that is not very relevant to you while being rather scarce on items that you do need.

I like to find out what works for me. You might well have a different approach. Just remember: If all else fails, there's always the PBO Forum!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

do a search on this forum, for what you are wanting to do, there will be many good ideas on how to tackle the job, some not so good, you can trawl thru them and get a rough idea on how to tackle the job, if you come unstuck then ask a specific question to the job..
You will find most things for the boat are covered by this forum, which have been asked in the past, if you have a specific boat with a owners association, they should have some answers pertaining to quirks of that model of boat..

As you become proficient and acustomed to your boat, in time everything will seem so simple, but at first it all looks so complicated, even the most simplest job...

And there are plenty of people at the boatyard who have their own boats, and most probably give you some tips...

the freebies mags from the sailing mags should give you some tips for the books to buy, or browse this site for books, or google chandleries for their books....

With christmas arriving on our doorstep, there are plenty of books on diesel engines, instrumentation, sail trim etc...

More difficult question than I first thought. I've got lots aquired over years which cover replacing garboards and rigging a timioguy up to grp repair and the calder book already mentioned.
Used to be that one book would cover it but boats now so much more techically complex that there's been a need to specialise.
These forums are excellent but can be a rogue contribution that just confuses until you learn who to ignore. Usually, the majority view is sound and I'm sure you have enough sense to detect a bullsh****r.
Ask away. There are a few squabbles among the grizzled veterans but anyone with a genuine question always gets a generous response.

I would agree that one can probably find just about everything re general maintenance tasks / jobs on the web and on this forum.

However books are still enjoyable to browse through, especially if you are on the boat out sailing or at anchor somewhere, and dont have internet access.....

And I agree that everybody will disagree about what is a 'good' or 'bad' book...... but I think I can safely say that Nigel Calder's 'Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual' is an excellent all round book - it is my bible.
The sub-title is 'How to Maintain, Repair and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems' - and I think it does explain how to do this rather well.
I have a copy of the first edition from 1990, but it has been updated since then. Here is a link to the book on Amazon UK :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boatowners-Mecha...7876554-5549459
I know that 43 pounds is not cheap, but they also have 2nd hand copies for sale from GBP 29.
