Arranging a lunch meet up with a few relatives who live abroad but are staying near Bishop's Stortford so looking for a nice pub with restaurant in the triangle above. Any ideas?

Failing this I shall go to the Lion and Lamb on the A120 near Takeley which is excellent but hoping not to have drive that far!

I like the Cock Tavern in Ongar High St. Good beer, OK food.
Its where I met the Artemii, so is ECF Legendary place.

Interesting to hear it is still there and not renamed something trendy. I grew up near Ongar, but have no current knowledge of eateries. My first experience of slightly too much EtOH was in the Gypsy Mead in Fyfield. Used to be a country club/restaurant in those far off days. I was with parents and aged 13 or so I hasten to add.

Smith's is excellent, but it's certainly not a "pub restaurant" which is what you asked for, and you'll find the food (and prices) are way above pub league.

The Cricketers is reliably good, and looks more pubby inside too. If your relatives are staying near Stortford, that'd be a convenient choice.
