PSS Shaft Seal issue

Braintrusts- I had a leak between the stainless & graphite donuts on my seal. The spray occurred at all RPMs. I tightened the seal by 1.5 cm. Now, the spray only occurs at low to mid RPMs, about two gallons an hour. No spray at cruising speed (2700RPM). Thoughts?

How long is your shaft ? Had problems with PSS seals and long shafts before as they were converted fron stuffing boxes the shaft resonates.

Shafts are 6 feet, but new cutlas bearings in the struts. Pretty solid install. The issue suddenly started after the boat sat in the water over the winter.

Could the cause be an old/deteriorated shaft anode/zinc? (Causing a weird harmonic vibration)?

Run some 600 grit wet and dry in the gap. It is possible that the two faces stuck together all winter have left the graphite blemished.

Have you checked the loaded dimension is correct. 25 MM. is the recommended setting so if you've added15mm you might overload the seal.

When new they emit a fine spray, but should be dry.

Possibly a build up of calcium deposits, in which case the wet and dry advice might work.
