I'm laying up my boat for 18 months. Is there any merit in putting a washer or two in between the carbon and the stainless ring? Or greasing the joint between the two?
I'm not certain, but I think the official advice is not to grease the faces. Maybe something like a thin PTFE fabric baking sheet liner as a neutral interface? I do know from experience from one of my boats is that the mating faces can stick together quite firmly (with possibly dire consequences) if not burped/separated manually after a week or so of not being used - this PSS seal is about 10 years old and works perfectly otherwise.
Edit: Looking at your other posts (OCC FB or here?) I think you plan to be out of the water - which is what I was replying to in this post. Maybe just release the outer ring by removing the grub screws taking tension off the rubber bellows completely and then re-compress the bellows when you come back using their repair kit (new O-rings and grub screws)?
PSS warn strongly against ever using grease.
If concerned about it, I would loosen the stainless ring and pull it back a little, this has the advantage of giving you the opportunity to re-do the correct compression when you refit, you can also inspect and clean the surfaces and prime it with water whilst you are at it. You would really need new set screws when you reassemble...
- just don't forget to do it before you launch... : -[

Since I found crevice corrosion on the stainless face of my PSS seal (see pic and story on my website under Metallurgy) I have always rinsed the faces in fresh water before leaving the boat ashore. This is normally for about 6 months but I missed 2017 completely, so one was 18 months. The seal has always been good on relaunch.
