The installation instructions for the PSS seal state that a water feed must be used, even on low speed displacement boats, when a bearing is fitted to the shaft log. Are they just refering to inboard bearings in the shaft tube or does the cutlass bearing on the end of the shaft tube fall under this description? I was led to believe that the cutlass bearing allowed adequate water feed to the bearing surfaces but want to ensure I comply with the spec.

At sailing speeds I very much doubt that there would be sufficient suction to unflood the shaft log.

Our last boat was built with a P-bracket to carry the cutlass bearing but this had been faired into a mini skeg to prevent prop damage when drying out. Effectively, this meant that the cutlass bearing was at the aft end of an enclosed tube/moulding, if not actually a shaft log. We had no problems at all with the PSS seal we fitted. A great bit of kit.
