I use a Psion 5 too, in fact I write software for it (not nautical). I have to say I don't use it on-board, but I do use "Ocean" for quick reference tidal info when I'm not near the almanac - ie at home or at work and daydreaming! You could use "Realmaps" with scanned in maps for limited chartplotting (if you plug in your GPS) but I almost never use the GPS, so the idea of using the Psion as well always seems too much trouble. "PsiGar" I think lets you store waypoint info on your Psion and exchange it with a Garmin GPS, but I don't use that for the same reason.

Have a look at http://p.pellot.free.fr/loggb.htm for a list of shareware and freeware "nautical Psion" programs including the ones I've mentioned.

Cheers
Patrick

There are some programmes available for nuatical persons that work on the Psion 5, I had a Tide predictor on mine and it was quite good, untill the Psion died. Look at http;//pda.tucows.com/epocsoft there are a number of free and shareware programs for the psion there

I use my Psion together with infra red phone for e mail - works very well, in some ways better than a pc since you can see the sender and the file size before downloading unlike IE.
Its also useable for spreadsheeting or word processing, which the palm most definitely is not, because of the tiny screen. It also makes sms messages much easier to send - none of that pressing each key 3 times!

Could do with a spare. If you want to sell it. pm me the condition and price.

Now that sounds interesting - what software do you use for email ? Did it come with it or have you had to download it ? if so, is it free?

I may well sell it - the outer casing is slightly worn, some of the outer plastic film coming away but that's it. The keyboard and screen are perfectly sound. It's got 8MB RAM (I think), PC interface cable, leather case etc.

What d'ya reckon you'd pay ?

Email and web browser should have come on the PsiWin CD-Rom that came with your Psion and contains the PC-link software. If you haven't got it for some reason, I think you can download either or both applications from www.psion.com. The web browser is a little limited - no frames or cookies - and unfortunately the better Opera browser doesn't run (at least in its later incarnations) on an old style Series 5 - only the 5mx etc.

Sending SMS via an infra-red equipped phone is also something I use the Psion for - see http://www.zenobyte.com/ to download the software "Phoneman", which is really very handy.

Finally, in response to the person who asked, I'm afraid I don't know of a Palm equivalent of the Nautical Psion site.

Cheers

the psion i use at the moment is a revo, which came complete with psions e mail programme which includes a facility to send sms messages. a friends psion 5 had the same facilities so i assumed that yours would have. as the previous message says, i'm sure you can download from the psion web site.

opera is a better browser, but will not work satisfactorily with only 8 mb of ram - you really need 16. however, my psion supplied browser does do cookies and frames. not that that is much help - internet via mobile phone is just not practical. screens too small really, and too much data heavy fancy graphics etc.

with 8mb memory, sorry - not interested after all!
