In an idle moment yesterday I was reading the East Coast Pilot entry for Bradwell and I have sent them an update for their website.

The shop in the village closed last year. There was a PO and shop right near the marina for those who could find it but the elderly lady who ran has recently died and that shop is closed too. The Marina Bar has now started to sell milk, bread and a few other basics (about time too one might say).

Talking of milk, we bought some in Shotley a few weeks ago - came in those square plastic cartons that you can't reseal properly. Bradwell are using them too and I have suggested that sailors would prefer a screw top container. Is it just me?

Nope not you Roger, it does seem a bit daft. My understanding is that the bar is run as a completely seperate entity at Bradwell which is a shame. The marina could really do with a small store/chandlery.

The shed the other side of the tower was once a chandlery. Sign on door says temporarily closed - sorry for the inconvenience. It has been like that for 4 years at least!

A small store would be good and the bar could be a bit nicer. We don't want it too flashy - might attract those Burnham types /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I saw the same sign on the shed, made me laugh as yes, it has clearly been there for some time. The place could do with a spruce up. Its an excellent location but the facilitiesa compared to other places, arent that great at all.

Location rules in my book and we don't spend as many nights there as we do elsewhere.

Should be there Friday night and Saturday but not Saturday night or Sunday.

The reason the chandlery shut was it was not finacially viable - and frankly it never will. There just isn't enough business. East Coast Pilot is having its next edition written right now and they will note your comment on their website.

Changing the subject a little, I was berthed in Bradwell a couple of weeks ago. Have you seen the size of the mullet swimming around there?

If I could catch one it would make a fantastic provision for my barby!

Just remember that the water does get changed very often in the marina and the water quality may not be that good /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I was told that the best thing to do with mullet is to wrap them in foil between two bricks in the fire embers. When the fish is cooked, throw it away and eat the bricks /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would NEVER eat anything that lives close to moored boats in a confined space - even if it does get flushed by the tide!

Its the stuff that gets 'flushed' by the boats that they feed off (or the stuff they feed off feeds off the the stuff that's 'flushed'). Or something like that! That should put you off.

Tried the mullett from the W Mersea Company Shed last year, very tough, but the cats liked it.

I wonder if Bradwell would allow the free Wi Fi to be installed, would make a big difference to us who can work on the boat.

Using the words Bradwell and free in the same sentence is a bit daring /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I once suggested that they had a webcam so we could see what the weather was like - the reply was "You'd never come here then" /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

But they seem more interested in attracting customers than Bradwell. Therein lies the problem - if they can't see the value then they won't do it. And berthing/overnight fees will increase to cover the cost of 'free' facilities which those of us who don't want them will also pay /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Bradwell is more your B&B than your 4 star hotel.

BUT they have invested in a lot more withies /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifabout 7 in the creek now but still no water /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

blood ell what does that make maylandsea blackwater marina where my boat is? Actually, I know as the owner described the boats on the inner pontoons as 'mud caravans'. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif (think there is only about 50 minutes of water every tide)

........... and what of the new pontoons ? Well at least on A, B and E. That was a fairly major investment but yes, the B&B comparison is a good one, and as you say its location is for us, unbeatable.

Talk of wifi though has really got me thinking. I could easily work from the boat then - is it a major installation cost for them ????
