If you need to ask the answer is probably to give the job to a professional.

If you are going to do it yourself first line of attack is to visit the boat with a measuring tape, pencil and calculator. There was an article on headlining in PBO last year (I think). They suggested removing exisiting lining carefully and using the pieces as paterns. Supplier of fabric will be able to advise on glue type and quantity when you give them the area.

Looking at my Prout Quest you will be working with large sheets across the saloon deckhead so this could be a tricky operation to do well.

I have only worked on small areas of headlining and used spray on contact adhesive. It is essential that you wear a good quality face mask that protects from organic solvents while working with the glue and as much ventilation as possible.

Have fun,

Sean.

Had our Prout Quest 31 done by Solent Boatcare of Gosport. Did an excellent job at a reasonable cost. Its not just the putting up the new, its getting rid of all the old glue-soaked foam also, horrible tacky sticky stuff, gets everywhere.

The large expanses of deckheads were done by mounting the new headling on plywood sheets which can then be de-mounted for access - not only easier to do and makes the rest easier to do but a practical solution and looks good too. The securing screws were covered in little 'buttons' of the headlining. Looks all very neat - especially if all the buttons are in line in rows longitudinally and transversely, which ours are.

You can do it yourself, but like everything its an art, and if you haven't done it before............Also, it takes time, esp if you're new to it. As SRM said - give the job to a professional. Good luck

Thanks for the information. The actual work will be done by professionals in Venezuela. I am in Florida about to buy the materials, as they are not available in Venezuela. I was hoping someone could advise on quantities to buy so I don't buy too little!! In the back of my mind is the figure of 75yards of 54 inch wide headlining together with 8 gallons of glue. Does this sound reasonable?
