No2 son finished his degree in Environmental Sciences and whilst having had a good time at Uni was still predicted boarder line first.

Results out and he missed the first by a small percentage - he go 69.4% overall and first are 70%. His Course Tutor has reviewed the results and cannot find another 0.6% so 2.1 stands.

Am delighted he got his degree, had a great 3 years and is a well rounded individual. He is disappointed.

No1 daughter finds herself in a similar bind. Bsc Biochemistry 69.6% - her tutor is reviewing her results this week.
TBH, as she's going on to do a Masters in Toxicology and don't think it matters much, but it seems to matter to her.

Congrats back!

When I got mine I never knew a % so have no idea how close I was to a 1st or more likely how close to the 2.2. Think I prefer it that way.

Going to his graduation in a few weeks - the first I have been to. Wasn't released from basic training at BRNC Dartmouth to attend my own!

Congratulations! I was pleased to get a 2.2 in 1958. Don't think class of degree means much if you are not going into academia. Interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team, willingness to take responsibility and show initiative and not wait to be told what to do are the most useful assets to make career progress. Good luck to your son.

Unless his system is very different to ours the tutor can do nothing about the marks - all decisions are made at an exam board following the appropriate regulations. At our exam boards we would look carefully at 69.4 and see if there was an academic case to make it 70 - e.g. third year marks better than second year, most courses above 70 etc etc. Bit silly of his tutors not to look at his spread of marks in advance of the board unless they actually felt he was a 2i student.
