I have ordered a new 30 foot cruiser and I am now looking at the list of extras available to be fitted by the commisioning boatyard.

Is it worth paying £206 to have a protective u.v. strip sewn in to the furling Genoa? How much shorter life would the Genoa have without the strip? Would I be better off saving the money to put towards a new sail?

I thing the Genoa is Elvstrom with a Furlex system.

It's certainly worth having a sacrificial strip on the sail. Unfortunately, buying any extras for a new boat from the commissioning boatyard is ludicrously expensive. It would be feasible to retro-fit a sacrificial strip, probably much cheaper, although it might not look as neat.

Surely any decent sailmaker will be able to make a perfectly good job of sewing a sarificial strip onto a sail and be able to give a quotation to do so.

As a guide, I have just had a quote for a new UV strip for my headsail. It is £9.00 per metre, BUT that is because I have removed the existing UV strip to save time/money.

If they had had to remove the old strip, it would have increased the price by (circa) £40.00.

In arriving at a comparison, don't forget the total meterage includes the foot and well as the luff!

Well worth doing. I was in exactly the same situation for a new 32ft boat two years ago. Cost from a local sailmaker was £170.

Get the local sailmakers to quote - It'll be a lot cheaper and easier 'cos its a new sail. Alternatively just buy the material and sew it on yourself all you need is a couple of spools of thread a couple of packets of needles, a palm, a pair of pliers and some contact glue.

Does wonders for finger strength!!

you have a new sail - so why not measure luff and foot ... trundle down to local sailmakers and ask.
As its a new sail - its a straightforward job and without stressed cloth, old UV to remove etc.
