Due to a long history of glaucoma and a recent infection, SWMBO has lost most of the sight in her left eye. The right eye is ok for now, but could go the same way. The consultant has agreed that sailing is not the root cause of the infection, and due to obvious apprehension on SWMBO's part we are considering whether some sort of eye protection is available.

I know that prescription ski/diving goggles are available - is there anything similar for the boatie scene? She's desparate to sail.

Any websites out there anyone can recommend?

TIA

Vyv

Thanks for that. I'm going to go down the route of 'industrial' type glasses with the wrap around side protection.

I've often been told that it is not possible to have "Polaroid" prescription lenses.

An alternative to Vyv's suggestion is The Optical Shop in Hong Kong (a Jardine Matheson subsidiary) if you have anyone passing through - amazingly they have 31 branches and no website! Or try writing to the Princes Building branch. I got my prescription pair for sailing there.

I seem to remember, from handling legal claims in my youth, that sympathetic opthalmia is a worry - the remaining good eye shuts down for no good reason at all - for up to one year after losing the sight of one, after that the risk, I seem to recall, becomes negligible, which is why claims for loss of sight in one eye are always settled more than a year after the end of treatment and personal accident insurance policies talk about "loss of sight in one or both eyes".

So I suppose be extra careful for one year. But I am not a doctor.

I've got some good leads on the go. The industrial type that will take prescription lenses seems to be the way to go, or for sports goggles with prescription lenses. There are plenty of suppliers around.

Ther other eye is going a bit off at the moment - mostly to do with the drugs she has been given. They hope to stabilise that. Sight is returning but its going to be a slow process.

She's thought of a guide dog, but didn't want to get up early to take it ashore for walks.

She's fine on the starboard tack - just dont come up on Rebel on port........

I have a pair of prescription Oakleys that are a pretty close fit, for the occasions when my contact lenses refuse to play ball...

I think skydiving goggles are quite good, wraparound but not clunky, and not megatight like swiming ones. The ones like Edgar davids wears, you know the fottball who reckons he is IT and plays for ac milan,
