I have just dredged up this report from Defra

http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/marine/documents/legislation/protect-marine-env-leaflet.pdf

It's difficult to absorb the range of projects which are under consideration but "by 2012 we are aiming to have an 'ecologically coherent network' of well-managed marine protected areas"

"Research by the University of Bangor for Defra suggests that a network of sites covering 14-20% of our seas may be sufficient..."

and they have a map showing how and where. (page 12) And if a Devolved Administration wants to add to the areas... they can.

Does anyone recall any consultancy on this ?

Yes, the bill went through parliament after endless debate and is now law.

If you consider that consultation then there was plenty.

As ever it is implementation that is key as we are discovering with the the Studland issue.

The threat is - "if you don't do what we say, we will use this law to force you"

Yes - we had endless drivelling about it in the Severn with the local "uni" sending out pretty low quality info. Then the authorities did what they and the RSPB had decided in the first place.

What really irritates me is the way that they look after the worms (which is what they wanted to preserve in one area) more than those of the sailors. Who cares if the worms are exterminated? I don't.

loooool.

I am starting to think that "conservation" is a sticking plaster to mask the bigger problems we face. Most of which are man made & no one has the guts to face.
