Hi, thinking of moving from Porthmadog to Abersoch for permenant mooring cos I'm fed up of being hemmed in by the bar. What's it like? Presumably if the weather's bad you can't get to your boat? Do you have to be a member of SCYC, and are there any council moorings? Is there a park for tenders? Thanks, Tim

frying pan to fire

Hi, what boat you sailing/motoring Tim, can be difficult getting in and out of Madog in a blow, whereas you can sail onto your mooring at Abersoch but then faced with a long pull back to the beach, the sailing club lay on a launch which will take you ashore but you probably know that if you have visited there. Speak to Owie at the Mooring layers etc next to the Lifeboat Station. Nice when it's nice but ? in a SE.

I have thought about Barmouth, and indeed it's my favourite harbour to visit. But again, the bar is a pain.

I sail a Steadfast 30 and have been in Madog for 10 years, and after the last 3 years' rubbish weather I'm looking for somewhere that means I'm not constrained by the tide, which generally rules out every where in Tremadog Bay except for Abersoch and Pwllheli. I can't afford a marina berth and apart from the piles, the other moorings dry at Pwllheli, and it doesn't really have the views.

Is there a dinghy park at Abersoch?

It certainly can be exposed to a NEly. Around 23 years ago, more than 100 yachts were beached/damaged/wrecked by a NE gale on Aug bank holiday sun. Most insurance companies will not allow boats to be afloat except in may to Aug. Even the moorings are lifted in winter. I spent a night on a mooring at Abersoch 2 w/e ago and it rolled all night!

Moorings are cheapish, but if its blowing at all then you cant use your baot as a weekend caravan! SCYC launch is the way to go but it only runs at certain hours, also SCYC membership is not cheap.
Pwllheli, its famous waiting list for the marina has disappeared however pile moorings, are great, Im on one next to Juggler, have a word with HM, Trevor or Ken. I suspect there are a few empty ones. Approx £116 plus Vat a mtre

Moved to Peeely Wheelie last year.

Met a young couple this weekend who have voted by moving their boat from Abersoch to Pullywelly moored up behind us or is it in front I dont know it depends if we are coming or going.

Deep water pile mooring to be recommended.

Agree with Stu contact HM asap.

Slept on board most weekends last year (hope you have plenty of stugeron if you want same at ABER.)

Views Can you complain if you can see the summit of Snowdon with slight covering of snow .

B****y cold NE up the chuff so turned boat around after much fun thanks ROY hoping to see a fine sunset.

Only thing I could see was Stu's greenhouse on top of his french floating caravan.

Downside of piles none oh except some noise about chucking overboard time on Sunday.

See you next weekend Stu:):):):)

On a personal note as a budget cruiser piles moorings offer a short dinghy ride to shower, toilet, water at HM office. (NB all visitors can raft up for cheaper option than Marina with HM permiossion.) Freindly family run chandlery and yard, small marina boat club for food and beer, Off harbour Fish and Chips at Maes to die for although service can be a little slow at peak times.Cold store for local sea food at rear of yard for those things I cant catch.

I wont be bothering with PSC after very dissapointing first year.

Only seem interested in running big events so their facilities and bar overrun by kiddies and parents very many weekends with championships all summer. Admire the effort but in my opinion they do not cater for low budget visitors and cruisers as meals and drinks expensive, no club owned access to harbour from water.

Facilities are outdated communal showers (Very non pc in this day of Child protection etc)

Marina users get a better deal but boy do you pay for it if you can get a berth either permanent or visitor.

Unlike Mad Dog you get no cheap winter lay up you need to go to a yard.
Me I just load up on a trailer and go home.

Nb tidal access at Pwllheli is ok except springs when you may still have to bide your time before negotiating the channel.

abersoch moorings

hi i had my jaguar 28 there for a year no probs with insurance only through april sept. however getting out to mooring hardly aniwhere for dinghy storage and car parking abismal unless members of scyc and use their launch, of which i was not a member. last year plummed for marina berth at maryport but unfortunate misshap in october wen gate failed damaged and sank several boats damaging my own "cosmetically ".
now back in marina following winter repairs, solway a good cruising ground , personally i wasn't impressed with tremadoc bay as when winds strong with west in them most places innaccesible particularly as winds prevail from sw . scenery of n wales though exellent.
