Hi team, fold/feather/fixed ? help please.......
Some say you lose 1/4 knot with fixed, some say its as much as 1.5 knots...
Have been recommended max prop for reliability and performance,(1.5K pricetag!) for 50hp volvo penta and saildrive 40foot monohull. (circumnavigation in mind) Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

i couldn't use brunton/maxprop because of potential problems when featherd at high speed so i 'settled' for folders, specifically flex-o-fold from CJR. i was surprised at how effective they are. mine can stop the boat in less than her own length from 10 knots.

and a bonus- half the price!

Well, after musing for about 5 years and reading recommendations for them on this forum this time last year I bought a Bruntons and I'm very happy with it.

We have a Rival 38 and it adds about a knot in light winds (<f4), gives better handling when going astern and similar performance to old three bladed fixed in forward, although it needs a few more revs. In terms of maintenance, you have a prop anode that has to be replaced each year together with re-greasing. Mine cost about your budget after a LIBS boatshow deal which knocked off the VAT.

In addtion, Brunton's pre and post sales service are a model that other marine suppliers would do well to imitate. I have no commercial interest in Bruntons but like to see good customer service.

met a chap at SBS (professional skipper) who'd kitted his new Bavaria 49 out for bluewater cruising, inc a folding prop. He'd calculated that it would take 3 days or so off his planned ARC crossing.
