Can anyone help.

I have a Hunton 36 with x2 volvo KAD44's and I'm currently running aluminium props, but they seems to dissappear!
I am thinking of buying Stainless steel props 'C7' but volvo are soooooo expensive, surprise surprise, steel developments can do Solas props which they say are a better all round prop.
I have even thought about buying abroad

Such a minefield can anyone shed light

I@ve been using a Solas prop from Steel Developments for 3 years now, on a Mercruiser Alpha One. Performs very well, whether it is better than Volvo, I can't say, but certainly very good.

Get a bit of surface corrosion, just tarnishing of polish really. Certainly don't get eaten away, but aondes dissappear faster with S/S.

In what way do they dissappear? Corrosion? Fall off (I'm an expert on props falling off) Either way can give you more in depth advise.

well the falling off part isn't true, at least not up until now.
I bought the boat sept 2003 and when she came out of the water one set of props where too pitted to be repaired so I bought a new aluminium set. The thing is I do use shore power all the time and think that this going to cause the metal work to corrode faster. I thought I might buy stainless props so I didn't have to spend anymore time thinking about it, also I have heard that becasue the stainless blades are thinner that ally they will give much better performance, and I do like going at my top 48 knot speed!

the bad news is that stainless props will probably give you an even greater top end!
it's not because they are thin - they don't flex and deform as much.
however you must keep your drive anodes 'up to date' or you will have nice shinny props and no legs

100% agreement. Just add to that........Stainless props DO rust. I would add extra bar annodes on the hull, and get the electrics checked for stray current electrolisis(sp?). Good luck

Ps. Do you want to buy a set of 3 C5 duoprops, the missing rear (smaller) props are available in Weymouth harbour / Newtown creek / Southampton water. You choose which place is nearer/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Agree with all comments below, and I would add that steel dev know a thing or two about props. Give them all your boats info and let them work out pitch, blades, overall suitability. 48kts eh!! Bet that puts a smile on yer face! (and I just love Huntons - though mine's a Windy)

You might be interested in some other reasons behind the reliability of props.

Luckily, since some years now, I am not dealing with duoprops anymore.
Maybe the situation changed in the meantime...
