I took our duo props off at the weekend, after two seasons from new, the original volvo black enamel has not fared well. big flakes comming off. I am particular about changing my anodes so there very little sign of corrosion on the props themselves.

Any suggestions on best coating / Paint type for aluminium props.

Hi,

I reckon 2 seasons is good for any finish on props.

On my duo props I used several coats of 2 part primer as this is very tough followed by a teflon antifoul that is safe for ally. That did a couple of seasons and all I needed to do last year was a couple more coats of Antifoul

I'd agree if they were SS, but these are Aluminium props - they'll fizzle away like teeth-in-Coke if you don't keep some sort of paint on them /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

dv.

You will need to clean down to bare ally and use an etching primer. Always prime soon as you clean or oxidation will occur. International do a 2 part primer thats good.

I always paint mine every season with spray cans of hammerite smooth paint about £7.00 a tin use 3 tins to paint my duo props.Seems to do a good job I also smeared them with lanolin as well last year as well as my trim tabs. Will see if it the lanolin has made any difference when I have the boat lifted out in April.

Sorry for the delay. When you have used the e/p you can then use a spray paint like hammerite then antifoul. The paint will often come off during the season but the e/p should have a permanent chemical bond.

Clean all the paint off using Nitromors (not Jelcoat stripper). Make sure they are spotless. Clean them again with acetone. Paint with an aluminium (aloominum if you are American) etch coat spray paint, two coats. Then paint two coats Trilux with a hefty dose (0.5 Fl Oz) of Oleoresin Capsacin (its the stuff that makes chilies hot) mixed well in. You can buy 17,000,000 Scoville OC on eBay.

The paint won't come off and anything that goes near it withers in the fiery chilli heat given off. Mine lasted two years - just done 'em again for this year. Drive legs too.

Bonza props mate!

(I knew if I hung around this thread long enough you'd be along!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Liselle, I can vouch for Dave's credentials when it comes to prop restoration as I have watched him renovate his over the course of the last couple of weeks and they are absolutely spot-on.

Even had the dubious pleasure last Saturday evening of eating my dinner off the same table that his newly painted props were sat proudly upon - complete with the accompanying aroma of trilux mixed with the Oleoresin Capsacin!

Thanks for all the replies, it seems that etch prime is the key.
I can sort that okay.
Just not sure about whether or not to use a 2 pack gloss black top coat, before applying trilux.
