Thinking of switching from butane (camping gaz) to propane cos I think it burns hotter. What wouldd be involved in so doing? Is it just simply changing the regulator?

Yes.Just the regulator and tubeing.

I changed when i got to the baltic as my butan woulden work ,too cold.I bought a new regulator and propane and it boiled the kettel twice as fast!

Its so hot the grid that i rest the pots on glows red!Never did that with butan. In my case i keep the bottle below but if it was outside as my bottles were on my last boat the sun might raise the pressuer, though in France propane use in homes must be left outside and piped to the cooker.

Its very odd that i found myself cooking with it as its very dangeres indeed, but cooks and heats really really well!!

Just now ive swaped my propane system for an alcohol one, haveing got use to tea in a jiffy im thinking of changeing back!!Just remember to always turn the valve off at the bottle!!And let your bilge pump run on when its dry that keeps the bilge gas free.

Propane is always better in the frozen north.
Apart from a slightly higher calorific value it has a much lower boiling point than butane, which normally refuses to operate anywhere approaching freezing.
Always the choice of the "hardy" sailor or camper.

How wrong can you be?

Calculated flame temperature of butane in air (dissociation considered) is 3583° F:
propane is nowhere in this league, weighing in at a mere 3573°.
Other fascinating info: the pressure in a butane bottle on a "normal" summer day, say 65° F, is about 15 psi (relative, of course): your propane gauge would show over 100 psi.
"Hotter" is nonsense, it all depends on how well your burners are set up.
But the propane bang is said to be slightly louder (unconfirmed).

Re: How wrong can you be?

The last post has put me off buying another propane "cube" and camping gas stove!

Perhaps the increesed delivery pressur helped my kettle boil twice as fast and the grid to glow very white red hot?

Cooking was really great. Fast but when turned down would simmer or make a sause quickly without burning it!I dont think i used the propane "cube" more quickly than a butan one?

My cooker was the camping gas one with a grill normaly for butan but worked really really well.

100 psi???

Lyon is a really great city.I met a wonderful woman there! And ate so well.

When i get back i want to come down the Rhone again and stay in Lyon after that the Rhone can be to fast for me, i want to buy a trailor and ship from Lyon to port saint louis by road!

Ca chauffe!

100 psi = 7 bars .

Re: Ca chauffe!

For those with a limited grasp of French....

100 psi = 7 bars. In Lyon there is no reason to change Butane to Propane. Almost all the fossil combustibles have the same calorific value by weight (1 kg of propane = 1 kg of butane = 1 kg of natural gas = 1 kg of fuel oil). If you are coming my way, let me know.... (but the beautiful lady left a while ago... 3 times alas!)
