Carefully turned off the gas bottle outside the house and went away for a week. Came back to find a gas ring burning merrily. Not only was I daft enough to have left it on, but the gas bottle valve seems not to work just when I would have liked it to. Can't do much about it until it's all gone....Never seen it before, not a nice scenario in house or boat, but then, you wouldn't know it had failed would you? It still turns down tight, but no effect.

Cheeky sods!

'We'll collect it and bring it back for testing'
'And bring a replacement?'
'No, we have to test it first'
'Don't think so, it's the only cylinder I have'.
'Oh. I'll get the depot to ring you'.

You wouldn't have two cylinders on an auto changeover would you?

If so you have to turn BOTH off.

Otherwise do nothing until the cylinder is empty, then call the cylinder supplier to get them to deal with the problem.

My only one, as above. Don't fancy using it for months unable to turn off or disconnect.

Got two choices. Either they come out to it or you take it to them. Disconnect the cylinder at the flexible and fit a piece of flexible onto the outlet, with a bolt in the end. Put it in a trailer or pickup truck and take it to the gas depot.

Two similar experiences both with 19kg propane-perhaps the bottle is one I returned scribbled all over in black!
First was a bottle with damaged taper which I had to seal with calortight.
Second was a nicely resprayed bottle which clearly had had a past life on the deck of a fishing boat-the ring welded to bottom it stands on was completely rotted away such that I had to prop it up with a brick.
If it is leaking through valve then safety seal should seal it off? and Calorgas should come and deal with it.
I also have recently had bottles that act empty but appear to contain some liquid-suspect water which means I have paid for several kg of water and at £30 plus a bottle-ouch.

Two large companies were fined for ballasting cylinders with water.
What a dangerous activity.

It is common to find "heavy ends" in the cylinder, this is made up of impurities in the liquid that do not vapourize, this would include the stenching agent, this is the same sort of stuff that builds up in the vapourizers of casr and forklift trucks and has to be drained off at regular intervals.
Some people think there is gas left in the cylinder and tip it upside down with 2 results, 1 you get liquid gas into the supply which is at tank pressure and blows the guts out of your cooker (and hopefully finds no ignition) or 2 you get the oily gunk (heavy ends) into the hose and then the cooker and this knackers all the bypass's in the taps and thermostats if fitted.

ps if some water in the cylinder some of it will get entrained with the gas and freeze in the oriface of the regulator causing the gas to stop intermitently.
