prop shaft.

Hi all, how is the coupling at the inboard end of the prop shaft attached,is it screw on or pushed on. my one if i look end on doesnt seem to have a keyway in it and no amount of warming and bashing will shift it so it might have a thread,i`v given up for the night.

Some (like mine) have to drift keys - one inside of the other which go through the flange and the shaft.

You have to get the inner key out before you can remove the outer.

In addition to the two keys (pegs if you like - don't have the correct terminology) there is a piece of monel wire going right through. Not really sure if this is of any benefit though.

Thanks,i dont think this one has,the shaft is an inch dia and just before the coupling it reduces to about 3/4 this is why i think it might be a thread,there was a 5/16 bolt through the middle of the coupling and shaft to stop it spinning off?

Is there a possibility that there is a taper on the shaft? These, if correctly fitted, can have a fierce holding power. Sometimes they are partnered by a keyway, but the key is to make sure that the two parts are always fitted in the same position; the taper does the actual driving. Applying a penetrating lubricant [automatic transmission oil is a good one] and leaving for a couple of days may have a beneficial effect.

Hi peter,there was a little movement in the coupling this morning when everthing was cold, i could feel a slight movement when i tried to turn it, a slight wobble.then it went tight. i dont want to resort to cutting it off.

if you're absolutely certain that there is a little movement then I reckon its not on a taper, this leaves a number of other possibilities, I think the key to removal is finding how its attached first, how far can you withdraw the shaft? far enough to see the forward end of the hub? if its rusty a good wire brush off might reveal a hidden pin?

Your quite right, if i knew how the thing was put on it would be a start, next step is a set of pullers, i can see the shaft in the centre of the coupling, no sign of any keyways or threads so maybe a straight pull will do it, im ashore at 5 tonight try then. thanks for all help offered. chris.

I think you are right, a good wire brush off I suspect will reveal whats holding it toether.

No grub screws!!! the thing is in mint condion no paint or rust if only it was that easy, coupling frozen on held in place with one 5/16 bolt.bolt removed nothing visible impedeing the .....ing thing still solid.next step freeze shaft with plumbers spray, heat coupling, result falls off. i`ll keep you posted.chris. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
