Prop removal

I've a pair of Volvo SX outdrives and I need to get the props off - one is badly notched and the other bent. Following the excellent advice on another thread this forum I'll be sending them to Steel Developments.

My question is how easy is it to remove the props with the boat in the water? The plan is to raise the legs and then get one of my overweight friends on the bow. Will they come off easily or do I need some sort of puller? I'm also concerned that I might drop something in the water if they free-up suddenly.

Anyone have any experience of this?

In the past I have used anchor windlass attached to pontoon to pull the bows down, this depending on your boat may raise the stern a bit

I've got duo props and taken them off a few times whilst boat is in the water. Not done it from the pontoon but actually in the water with the boat. Just make sure you don't drop anything.

I used to change the outer prop while at sea (blades used to shed off occasionally).
Strip off to undies as the swell would wash over the bathing platform.

I have only once changed the inner prop while floating.

I used electrical tape to fasten string to the tools, a loop in the end allowed them to be fastened loosely round my wrist.

I didnt bother to weight the bow down, I just changed underwater and gave the tools a good rinse afterwards.

Hang an inverted umbrella under the leg to catch any falling debris. It matters not if the brolly is in the water or not.

This really is a must (ask me how I know!) In fact I used a large bucket, but an Umbrella is even better.

I have changed the prop while the boat is in the water before, using a floating prop wrench and disposable (i.e. cheap) tools for when I drop them. I also carry all the spares needed if anything falls off the shaft (Nuts, Thrust washer etc). But I really like the umbrella idea, thanks.

An easier method with a boat of your size is to back it upto a slipway or shallow area of water. You can get in the water and it makes changing them a doddle, only need to get wet upto your knees.
