With such great weather on Saturday we decided to run down from Brighton to Gosport for an overnighter. About 2.5 miles off Eastborough head we picked up something on the port prop. Didnt see anything floating prior to this although there was a huge amount of weed around that we were dodging. Fortunately we were not on a pot rope as we could still move around but there was vibration on the port engine. Tried the astern idea which I think did throw some stuff off but still some vibration.
Then followed a very leisurely voyage home to Brighton!
Sunday morning some friends brought along an underwater camera so we could confirm what was there and he being a diver, albeit without his tanks and stuff went down and cut it all free. It was mostly plastic woven sacking and a few peices of rope that were all nicely spliced so looked like part of a fishing rig. I think the rope cutters had done their best on the rope but that plastic woven sacking just seems to bind round itself into a big mess with enormous strength.
You guys who have experienced this before is there likely to be any associated damage. We had the cutlass bearings replaced only a few months ago so they should be as good as it gets but is there a chance it may have affected the engine alignment?
