The attached photo is from the prop on my 1988 Sadler 32. Can anyone help decrypt the hieroglyphs? Left Hand I have got, I am guessing its a 12 inch diameter?

Any other details would be much appreciated as I am looking to change it - unfortunately I am very under powered by it... Looking at the Kiwi Prop as a replacement.

Many thanks

I can't help with interpretting the information, but it's probably not necessary for you to know the details of the current prop in any case. When I replaced my prop I found that the different manufacturers were willing and able to suggest a suitable replacement based on my boat model, shaft rotation, shaft diameter and gearbox reduction ratio (the Volvo 2002 fitted to my boat comes with one of two gearbox ratios).

The only other information they might need is the overall diameter of your existing prop and the shortest distance from its blades to the hull - so they know the largest diameter prop that will fit - which are both easy to measure.

Like my boat, yours is a very popular model and I'm sure the prop manufacturers will have recommended fitments for it.

As suggested the supplier of the new prop will recommend a size. Unless you have an unusual engine/gearbox installation, the boat is well known enough for a good supplier to advise. Talk to Darglow about either a Flexofold or a Featherstream.

The M.12 is the generic name which Radice give to their small 2-bladed model, which goes from 12"-16" diameter. Looks like you've got the 16" (see bottom right of stamping) but, being 2-bladed with a fairly narrow aspect, doesn't have much shove compared with the usual 3-blader.

If you still have the original Watermota Sea Panther and gearbox, it may well have been set up for a 3-bladed prop, with a shaft speed to match: perhaps the gearing is a little too low for the 2-blader.

Also, judging by the slight pink patches in the surface, it might be a good idea to take a good look at your anode bonding before fitting an expensive new prop.

+1

Replaced our fixed 2 blade with 3 blade Featherstream, big difference in performance under power and less drag when sailing. Excellent service from Darglow.

It could be that the numbers represent 6 inch pitch on a 16 inch diameter, but worth measuring it. Possibly more to the point is to determine the fit on the shaft, as you are looking to change the type of prop. You'll need to know the diameter of the shaft, the gradient of the taper, the dimensions of the keyway and the thread for the retaining nut. I was lucky when I bought my boat, it had a Darglow folding prop fitted with a serial number (from 1986). They looked it up and were able to give me all the details to specify a replacement.
