Thanks to finding a fishing net, I have a chip out of one blade of my prop. It is two bladed and about 14 in duameter. The chip is about half an inch wide and a quarter of an inch deep. Should I be concerned about it? I would welcome any advice.

Will certainly cause vibration, wear , and loss of performance, suggest you get someone to have a look this winter.

It will cost very little for a prop specialist to check the balance. If needed, the chip can be repaired within reasonable cost - a lot less than new, and a lot less than refurbing the drive train when, after a season of use, the cutless bearing is shot through uneven wear etc.

Props should be in pretty good condition to do their job. A nick can actually produce vibrations at certain revs - annoying in the least.

Off with it

Over to a good specialist have it brazed, re-machined and polished - cost about £20.

Not only will you notice appreciable vibration, you'll lose thrust and increase wear if you don't do it.

Have a word with Les Hill of Lake Engineering - Unit 5, Stepnall Reach, Blandford Rd. Hamworthy, POOLE PH16 5BW tel 01202 621631. He supplies most of the marine engineers on the S Coast.
