My involvement with Scaramouche started 3 years ago when I met the head of six form from an inner city state school in a pub on the south coast. He had invited me to meet him there so that we could talk about the boat he was about to buy. A 45ft German Frers that was built in 1982 for the Admirals Cup. The yacht had been laid up in Sandwich in Kent and was being sold for £17k. From that moment on I was hooked by the teachers’ passion and ambition to make this work. His aim from the outset was to enter Fastnet. My aim was to just make sure the yacht was seaworthy enough for the passage from Sandwich to Poole. Luckily enough, she floated well and most of the essential systems worked. We conducted the delivery with students as crew, many of whom hadn’t sailed a yacht before.

The following few years involved quite a lot of maintenance, extensive training and lots of meetings around the country to promote the project. A highlight for me was to be invited to Buckingham Palace to spend an hour with Prince Philip. Although he didn’t donate anything, I’ve no doubt the extra publicity helped encourage a few sponsors to come forward.

Well, here we are – three years in and we’ve only gone and done it… The first ever crew from a comprehensive school to finish the notorious Fastnet Race. I salute the teachers that pushed this project from the outset. A life changing experience for the 8 students that took part and a very well deserved prize at the end. We were first up at the prize giving as winners of the Media Prize. The project has captured the imagination of the nation and we have been featured in various national publications and news channels. The boys are all so chuffed, and rightly so!

I documented the race with a short film. I hope you enjoy it!

Well done them..

I hope the crew don't suffer bullying and get ostracised by fellow students because they were "elite" as happened to one of the Olympic Team GB.

I met them at LTSC a couple of years ago and again in Plymouth just after the finish. What a great bunch!

Thanks for the film.

It has probably made a huge difference to the students confidence in themselves. Certainly First Officer, had a lot more belief in her ability after we had crossed the Bay of Biscay twice, just to up.

8 students get loadsa money and attention.
The other 8 million have staff facing redundancies.
A major aim of the project is to give sailing experience to as many pupils as possible. So far they have taken about 200 different pupils sailing. They had a girls team on ladies day at Cowes Week and on the other days the elite crew were training younger sailors.
When I met them in Lymington they were doing their homework before giving their presentation. For staff and pupils sailing is very much in addition to school work.
I can't see what teacher redundancies have to do with this project. It is all about improving outcomes for students.

And setting an example of what you CAN do with your life. That's for pupils and future teachers. Small private investment, massive public return. What's not to love.

And the Scaramouche story shows what can be done if one of those teachers pulls out a finger rather than whinging.
FFS, some people just refuse to be happy sometimes.

Brilliant stuff, good work Pete, what a fantastic story.

I was at the Fastnet prize giving, great to see the lads on stage for their award. I congratulated them afterwards, they all looked somewhat shell shocked but happy.

Well done to all involved. An inspiration to us all and a great demonstration of the positive influence and transformative potential of our beloved sport / hobby.
