It may be a small point, but there seem to be an awful lot of contributors who can't be bothered to fill out their profiles.

IMHO, this devalues the site, especially on issues where advice is being sought.

For example, the hand-held radio thread was of particular interest, espcially the recommendation for an Icom icm iv. But reading the contributor's profile gives me no clue at all as to how sound that recommendation might be.

If he/she is relatively inexperienced, then rather than believing the portable in question has amazing powers, I might reply suggesting he/she gets the boat's main set checked. On the other hand, a good profile indicating plenty of experience might persuade me to take a much closer look at the Icom mentioned.

As a a relative newcomer to this site I am prepared to be shot out of the water. But what do other people think? Should a certain minimum amount of info have to be included in the profile before access is allowed?

This raises its head regularly and one of the major problems is verification - anyone can put anything in their profile and there is no way of knowing whether it is true.

Best treat all information as suspect and double check any advice unless you have personal knowledge of the poster. It is not unknown for the occasional imposter/Walter Mitty to appear on a forum. As an example, there is no one on this forum who could tell you whether my picture is me or someone else and I've been knocking around here for the last four years!

You're so right. As an Anglican Bishop, it's my job to listen and to provide spiritual guidance on matters ecclesiastical during the week.

At weekends, I am represented by a Canon and can indulge in my sailing and cross-dressing. Naturally, not everyone in my ministry is aware of my hobbies nor propensities and I therefore keep my profile minimal.

I think this was your point, no?
