Problems with Garmin 3010 chartplotter

I know it's a bit dated but up to a couple of weeks ago it had given sterling service.

First it started with "Accuracy alarms" from time to time then "Remote GPS connection lost". At first a reboot of the plotter would have it working again but now even that fails.

The problem seemed worse after rain so I have checked the junction box where the ariel feeds into the main plotter cable and where that cable plugs into the plotter. No sign of damp anywhere.

Can anyone suggest what two averagely capable bods can do if anything. I installed it all myself so know wher it all goes.

Luckily we have paper charts and an iPad with Navionics bit a screen in front of the helmsman makes life easy in the very difficult waters of the Swedish archipelago.

It's likely that either the GPS receiver is faulty, or there's a connection fault somewhere. You've said there's no sign of damp, but there could be corrosion on the wires where they're connected, so it would be worth remaking the GPS connections. The GPS receiver also should have an inline fuse, which would be another thing to check for clean connections.

plus I think a few GPS mushrooms do have a battery in them and that does fail after certain number of years. Worth removing and opening up the mushroom since you've done the checking on the plotter side. Worse come to worse, a new (s/h) working gps mushroom should do it!
You seem to be lucky, 2K and 3K series garmins used to have problems with the screen and water ingress.

I had a Garmin 3005 at the helm would have been a similar vintage: despite being nominally "waterproof" it collected rainwater inside the casing presumably from leaks round the screen or through the control buttons. First symptom was condensation inside screen clearing as it warmed up.

Died at 2 years old: out of warranty but Garmin did a "factory exchange" for about £200. That replacement lasted another couple of years before I opened it up and got about an eggcup-full of water out of the interior. Dried it out and reassembled, worked OK again for a while. A year later I turned it on and nothing happened - again water inside but this time it did not revive. Garmin said ".... product no longer supported".

Didn't buy another Garmin.....
