Problem with Yamaha outboard

I have a Yamaha FT50 4 stroke High Thrust outboard motor.

Last week-end, when I wanted to start it, when turning the key, the motor didn't start. I open the cover, and see that the starter motor didn't run.
I changed the relay of the startermotor, and now it turns, but it doesn't go up so to make the flywheel magneto to turn, or if it goes up, it seems not to have enough power to make it turn, so that the motor starts (battery is fully charged, and the relay is the correct one).

Any sugestion on which is the next step?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Miquel.

starter motor bearings. where it's been stored they will dry out and rust. it's an easy job to do, as long as you have a general mechanical ability. remove the motor, take out the long bolts, clean and lube the bearings, check the commutator and brushes and clean, reassemble, and if you want to, paint it.. it'll help keep the damp out.
also sounds like the benix needs a bit of easing too, same applies... only don't paint it!

good luck... oh and by the way don't ever hit the starter body, the magnets will shatter.

regards, steve.

I'm no expert, but if the starter motor is working I'd try another good battery as they don't last forever, even when apparently fully charged.

On cars a common problem with starter motors is the 'bendix' (the spring-loaded cog) on the end sticking. Might be worth a look.

You could try '<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.marinepower.com>http://www.marinepower.com</A>' or '<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.marineengine.com>http://www.marineengine.com</A>'
