I've two Raymarine Axiom plotters, 12 inch at chart table 9 inch at helm both linked by seatalk. A problem has arisen after updating the navionics. Chart table one has micro SD card in plotter, this updated fine, helm has none and now doesn't run through the start up procedure. This system was working fine before update. Does the chart table plotter update the software at helm or or should it be done directly by removing micro SD card and fitting into helm plotter. The SD card was updated on my PC at home with the navionics software. Any help would be much appreciated.

Both plotters need to be updated independently, they don’t sink over the network. You can take the update on the SD card from one and plug it into the other and update. Or you can update via mobile phone on cellular mode with the axiom linked via WiFi. I don’t know, but if both axioms are connect to one mobile phone hotspot, them I assume both will update. You can of course connect each plotter to a WiFi and they will update using the menu option for that.

While I am writing about operating system updates, I looked up Navionics chart updates for networked axioms and this what Google AI provided:-

Yes, networked Axiom plotters can synchronize Navionics chart updates using Plotter Sync, which transfers updates from the Raymarine or Garmin Boating app to the plotter via WiFi. To use this feature, both the plotter card and the mobile app must have an active subscription for the same region, and the plotter must be networked to the app's internal Wi-Fi.

How the synchronization works
  • Mobile app updates:
Start by ensuring both your mobile app and plotter card have the same chart region coverage.

  • Download and sync:
Use the Boating app to download updates to the app. Once updated, connect to the plotter's internal Wi-Fi and start the sync process to transfer the updates to the plotter's card.

  • Subscription requirement:
An active subscription is required for both the mobile app and the plotter card to enable chart updates and advanced features like Plotter Sync.

  • Transferable data:
The sync process transfers updated Nautical Chart and SonarChart™ data. Routes and markers can also be synced between the devices, though the plotter update itself is not automatic.

  • Overlapping coverage:
Only the chart data in regions where both the app and the plotter card have overlapping coverage will be updated.
What to keep in mind
  • Networked vs. SD card:
While you can update charts via an SD card, using the Plotter Sync feature over Wi-Fi is a key benefit for networked plotters, as it allows for updates directly from the mobile device.

  • Subscription requirements:
A key requirement is to have an active subscription for your Navionics app and a corresponding subscription for the Navionics card in your plotter. Without an active subscription, you will not receive new updates.

Sorry, that is incorrect. If both plotters are turned on they will update over the network.

That's typical AI, it's largely drivel.

Okay, but in another thread, with two Axioms, different versions, you recommended that one is updated with the other powered down, then, repeat for the other, so that both were on the same firmware. I used that thread, and searching, to give my answer. I did assume that would be similar. However, I accept your correction.

Thanks I've renewed my subscription last week I've also been using my mobile as a hotspot to update to a newer version but again only done this on one plotter so it my be that I will need to treat each plotter separately.

Yes there was an update for a newer version but again I only did this for the chart table plotter and not the helm one, could this be an issue.
Sorry I have older Lighthouse 2 kit so not sure about Lighthouse 4 - sure PaulR will be along shortly to clarify.

But in the older kit to share Raymarine chart data from a single card it needed both
- Same version software on both devices
- SeaTalk HS cable as well as the usual SeaTalkNG
But that may not apply to your generation.

How does the Navionics licensing work across two plotter cards? I thought you needed a separate licence per card (expensive), hence why went the SeaTalk HS cable and a single card instead.

Yes, both plotters must be on the same firmware. You now need to update the one with the older firmware, with the other one turned off to avoid crashing the older one.

If the two are on different versions it can be problematic (or impossible) to do over the network, because the one with the older firmware typically won't boot, so has to be done separately. If they are both on the same version they should update over the network. Of course, there is no harm in updating them separately, but with only one turned on at a time.

I don’t know if it’s related but there is a known issue with the latest L/H update and RM recommend down grading to previous version.

Update, there is only one SD card shared between the two plotters. The outcome is chart plotter has navionics software update, then removed SD card placed into helm plotter switched it on waited a few moments and now back to normal with a chart screen, SD card back into chart table plotter. So lesson learnt.
Thanks for replies, interesting.

You say "navionics software update", do you mean chart updates or software update for the plotters ?

Chart update from the SD card that I downloaded on my PC. The software for plotter I was able to download through my phone hotspot from Raymarine.
I'm confused, you keep referring to "Navionics software" on a SD card and in post #12 you talk of swapping this card between plotters to fix the issue. But, Navionics is not "software", it's charts and you don't have to put the card in both plotters.

Plotter "software" is Raymarine Lighthouse and both plotters have to have the same version.

Posts #12 and #14 contradict one another.

I think he must be talking about both chart update and separate L/H update for a master and slave setup.

So I'm not as good or knowledgeable as you are with all things computing. That said I downloaded the newer version of lighthouse 4 to one of the plotters (master) this in turn has updated the second plotter. The SD card was updated with the latest version of chart for the UK and installed into my nav station plotter. At this point I have a problem as the plotter at the helm doesn't go through the start up. So after several attempts I shut plotters off, transfer the SD card re-start and all is workin. I don't know the technicalities of it all but it worked.
